We actually have a fairly large population of people from Mexico out here in Tennessee. I don't really know what the particular attraction is for them, but I've recently had way too much work done on my property, and every contractor employs almost exclusively gentlemen who I struggle to speak to in my very limited Spanish (Mrs. Hill in the 9th grade just didn't do her job).
The beer is shockingly dark. I absolutely do not expect a Mexican lager to be this dark. They are usually something very light - like an American macro-lager with a bit more of a citrus flavor. This is already making its mark. The head won't leave lacing, and the tiny bubbles can't quite cover that beer. The aroma is deep into limes. It's not lime juice, but it smell like a thick version of the Bud Light Lime I remember not particularly liking.
First sip is tangy, lime, and a solid (like rock solid) malt. It's very different than that Budweiser swill, and it is quite good. I really kind of wish I had just come in from working in the yard to see if this would be as quenching as it seems like it would be. I have not had any Mexican lagers that are anything like this. Does that mean this really doesn't seem to follow the standards of the style? I don't know. I'm no gatekeeper. I like beer, and this is pretty good so far.
Tip-in is ripe lime juice and a hazy, cracker malt. The middle is a refreshing river, but it doesn't have the thin nature that most Mexican lagers do. The malt is stiff, and this isn't going to wilt under the weight of a little heat. The finish is a surge of the lime as tartness clings to the lips for the trail off.
