I got an email from Tailgate telling me that this was going to be available at my local tap room sometime over the next weekend. I thought it seemed a little much to be alerting people to that kind of thing, considering the sheer number of different beers and styles they seem to go through. Well, they hooked me with their stupid stunt, and I really wanted to try this, so here we sit. Me and a barrel aged beer that is the Rolls Royce of beers - a milk stout.
It pours blacker than most, and it is reluctant to produce much of a head - as is typical of a barrel aged beer. So, I have a minimal ring around the sides of the glass and a dusting across the top. The aroma is delightfully sweet molasses and dark fruits inside an alcohol-laden oak barrel. It smells rich and creamy, and I want to dive in. Instead, I'll sip.
First sip is delicious and decadent. It's sweet to the point that I have to remind myself that "sweet stout" is just another name for milk stout. The syrupy smooth drink is heavy and laden with alcohol and lactose sugars. I don't know that I would call this ice cream, but I could agree that a chocolate sundae might be seen in this taste, if you squint your tastebuds.
Tip-in is chocolate covered vanilla and cherry with woody alcohol making itself known right away. The middle spreads into a thick syrup that amplifies the flavors that were in the tip-in, and it is fantastic. The finish is the cherry on top with a surge of sweet chocolate and vanilla carrying alcohol into the trail off.
