I figured I had put this off for long enough. People give Bud a hard time because it's an "everyman beer" that appeals to the masses and is relatively cheap. Of course, when you have the scale of Anheuser-Busch for brewing, you can reduce prices accordingly. But this is a beer you can reliably get at any beer store you walk into. The name is synonymous with beer. Is it any good at all?
The clear gold beer sports a head that has virtually no retention. A very light dusting of bubbles remains with very few points of nucleation in the depth of the beer. The aroma is malt heavy, and it has a strange metal tang to it that is unexpected and unpleasant. It's simple enough.First sip is sweeter than I remember, as a corn sweetness permeates the beverage. A biscuit malt is carrying whatever flavor load there is to carry in this sip, but it's not much of one. There isn't any bitterness to speak of, and the overall effect is watery. It's possible my process is letting this get warm too quickly - I understand this is best when very cold.
Tip-in is mild carbonation tingle with metallic tinge and sweet corn. The middle becomes a bit more grainy as the carbonation gets loud on the roof of the mouth and a thin stream of water flows across the tongue. The finish is a snap of carbonation cessation as sweet corn turns to mild B.O. for the trail-off.
Bottom Line: Not as bad as I expected, but not good.
