From what I can tell, the highest ABV I've had a review of so far is when Danger Will did a review of rum. That one sat at 68% ABV, and the nearest one that I tried was the 64% ABV "Blue Flame" moonshine that absolutely, positively sucked. It was lighter fluid that they claimed would get you drunk. I couldn't stomach enough of that stuff to tell if it would have gotten me drunk, and I can't recommend that anyone else ever try it. This, however, is different. Absinthe has acquired an almost mythical status where I remember hearing about people going blind drinking it when I was a kid. Is this that stuff? Is it any good?
The beverage is a not entirely attractive yellow-green. Other than that, it reacts in the glass like any other liquor. The aroma, which I expect to be heavy alcohol, is not that. I don't know why, but I expected nothing but alcohol, and this smells like black liquorice. Is this going to be a French version of Jägermeister? I can't say I'm a fan of that drink, even when it's combined with a good beer.
First sip is... impressive. I'm not saying it's great, but it's fascinating the amount of alcohol burn (and possibly something else added) that you can infuse into a beverage that also tastes almost entirely like black licorice (yes, I spelled it both ways in this review). This is clearly a beverage intended for after dinner sipping like a port or similar sweet, strong beverages.
After sipping for a while, I can say that there is a LOT of burn for the flavor, but it's not terrible, based on the comparison I would make to moonshine. I am okay with black licorice in general, but I don't know that I would go to it all that often (the herbs in here aren't doing much at all). As a result, I don't think I would go to this very often.
