Once again, I have done the unimaginable. I have started with the derivation of the beverage before trying the source of the derivation. In this case, I tried the spiced rum before trying the regular rum. As I'm not a guy who is particularly familiar with rum (although 11 beverages with rum in them seems a lot higher than I remember) I still don't really know what flavor profiles to expect with a generic rum.
It's clear. Did I know that rum was a naturally clear liquor? If I did, I didn't remember. Looking back, the coconut rum was clear, but that seemed more of an aberration than anything else. The aroma is almost nothing. I mean, there's alcohol, but if you told me this was gin or vodka, I wouldn't argue with you. I wonder what it will taste like.
First sip is arguably better than unflavored moonshine. But, it's only arguably better. It is quite acetone-flavored. There is a bit of something else, and it makes this stand out from something like a white lightning, but I'm not sure it's enough of a difference to make a difference. I'll keep trying it and get back to you. Oh, and the Kentucky hug was pretty good.
Continued sipping shows that it mellows out very quickly. This really gets smooth as it loses the cold that it had in it, and I like it a lot better. I'm not sure it will ever turn to rum as a go-to beverage, but it's... better than the 0.0/5 moonshine?
Bottom Line: Not the worst thing.
