I had a few of the Malibu beverages before, but I haven't had their rum straight. Of course, by the time I'm done with this, I will still not have had their run straight. I assume they sell their rum without some flavor added, but this isn't it. This is their rum combined with coconut liqueur. I didn't purchase this on my own, and I probably wouldn't have. I don't particularly like coconut, and I'm anticipating that I'm not going to particularly like this. That's just the way it goes. I don't recall if I had commented in the past about the fact that it appears this Malibu beverage is produced in Arkansas. I'm sure they have some twisted rationale for why it's not made in Malibu.
Well, I don't drink rum, and I certainly don't drink coconut liqueur, so I didn't know what to expect for the color of the beverage. It is clear. It is water that is a little thick. It sure as hell smells like coconut. This smell is very peculiar, however. I don't know why, but this smell puts me in mind of the pumped in aroma in airport bathrooms. Is that what I've been smelling all this time? Either way, the sense memory is very thick, and I know this is the exact smell that I have encountered before.
First sip reminds me of why I don't like coconut. It's the taste! Generally speaking, this has coconut, and it is very sweet. It is doing a pretty good job of hiding the 21% ABV, but it's not hiding any of the coconut, and it's not trying. As a result, I don't like it. I'm not going to continue drinking a beverage that I don't like, and it's no fault of theirs. I just don't like coconut.
