I don't expect this to go particularly well, but I've been surprised before. This beer comes with a reputation, and that reputation is not particularly good. I'm sure there are people who enjoy the taste of this beer, as it seems to sell particularly well, but I don't appear to be the target demographic. That said, I picked this up just so I would have the experience, as I have never had this beer before. It could be great. It could knock my socks off, and I am looking forward to that kind of experience. Heck, I'm still thinking about the Yuengling Light that really impressed me with it s ability to simulate just regular beer.
It's a pale yellow, but it's not a stark pale, if you know what I mean. It is lighter than the color of beer that I would normally pick up, but it is not so light as to make me believe that they simply added water to an existing beer. The head comes out pretty well, but it doesn't stick around very long. This seems to be a pattern with most of these light beers, and I'm not entirely sure why. I guess it's fairly easy to get enough carbonation going to generate a head, but retention is difficult with whatever changes they are making to the brewing process to remove calories. The aroma smells very much like a lager, as it has sweet corn and biscuits. There is not a hop to be seen, but this is a lager. I can't expect vibrant hops from a lager.
The beer is cold, and that is doing it favors. The first sip is pretty simple, and it's not immediately off-putting. There are plenty of beers that try too hard, and the result is something that repulses immediately. This isn't that kind. This is, instead, a beer that has not enough flavor, so I'm not sure that I can get the full experience of enjoying a beer by having one. That said, I do remember having some light beers in college that were distinctly repulsive with their nondescript and somewhat offensive taste that got more skunky as the beer got warmer. I don't know if this will suffer a similar fate, but the first sip wasn't absolutely terrible. It just wasn't good.
Tip in is sweetbread and corn with mild carbonation tingle. The middle does a pretty good job of keeping carbonation going to make the beer seem more robust than the taste would allow you to think. It doesn't venture much past the sweet bread that it started with, but it seems like it isn't really trying to. The finish is a little bitter, but I'm not even sure where that's coming from as the carbonation seems to be the only thing that manages to hold on for the trail off.
