Untitled Art has had a very mixed run. Most of their beers have been, in fact, beer. The most recent review I did of one of their beers, almost 2 years ago, was a nonalcoholic brew. This is, similarly, free of alcohol. Or, it is so low in alcohol that it can call itself nonalcoholic. What I find slightly more interesting is that it has 90 calories per can, and that puts it lower than some of the recent low-calorie beers that I've had. These guys have demonstrated the ability to create good beer, and I'm hoping that they can translate it to this good brew.
It is dark, but it is not black. I don't know if it's coming across the pictures, but this is a ruby red. This is not the kind of ruby red that Guinness has been described as, as you have to look at the fringes of the glass in order to see the ruby. This is the same color throughout the center of the beer. It is very dark, but that shouldn't be confused with hazy. The white bubbles might actually leave a little lacing as they go down to just a smattering on top. The aroma smells like roasted malt and chocolate. I am still really hoping they pull this off.
First sip is sweet, chocolate, and I think I can even make out some marshmallow. I don't know that I'm tasting any graham cracker that you would normally find in s'mores, but that should really be coming from a malt, and I don't even know that this has malt in it. Well, I say that, but they call it a malt beverage right on the can. So, it presumably has malt. It's not a particularly strong start, but it's not off-putting.
Tip-in is sweet chocolate, but something is really off. I don't know what they have added to try and make the seared outside of a marshmallow, but it is not intended to be sampled in this way. It is just not good, and it is already tainting the rest of the beer. Sorry, it's not a beer. The middle is watery and nearly flavorless. The finish has an echo of flavor, but it is at best a dull thud that sends that weird artificial scorched marshmallow taste into the trail off.
