I don't know anything about rum. I know that pirates drink it, and I believe it originates, usually, from the Caribbean. I don't really know what I'm looking for, and I didn't even expect that this was going to be around the store where I got it. In fact, I grabbed it because it said Sugarland's Shine and hazelnut. I figured a hazelnut moonshine might be something worth trying, but it turns out that this is an entirely different kind of alcohol. Well, I'm still going to be trying it. Wish me luck.
It looks like that honey whiskey that I did a review of. I'm sorry, it was a bourbon. Someone is going to be pedantic and explain to me what the difference is, but I don't really care. Either way, this is a very light color, and it actually reminds me, now that I look at it, more of moonshine that has had a little bit of color added to it to signify whatever flavor it supposed to be. If I sniff it for a little bit, I can smell the hazelnut, but I don't know what I'm supposed to be expecting from the rum. I suppose this should be a treat either way.
First sip is pleasingly good. It is quite smooth, and the toasted hazelnut is merging with a seared brown sugar, and the whole thing gels really well together. The alcohol is noticeable, but it is complementing the flavors rather than distracting from them. As I don't really have a good method for reviewing hard liquors, I'm just going to sip this more and continue to give you feedback. I think that toastiness of the hazelnuts is a little strong at the beginning, but it turns in the buttery smoothness with honey and some spices by the finish. I'm starting to be a little sad that I got the small jar of this rather than a big one.
