I don't think I've had enough beers from Jackalope to really judge them as a brewery, but they need to step it up. My rating system (which I used to get a bit of guff about, but people appear to have... I guess they stopped reading) puts 2.5 right in the middle. That's an average beer. When you go from Hicu to Mini Boss, you'll pass through all the other options, and right there in the middle is the average beer. Nothing wrong with that, but you should be shooting higher.
There is a slight haze to the nicely golden beer with a white head. The bubbles reduce to a strangely even and yet still patchy top to the beer. The aroma is really causing me to strain my noseballs. The dull aroma is biscuits and citrus. Maybe "dull" is the wrong word. It's just really faint.
First sip is a reminder of how nice a simple pale ale could be. This is maltier than I remembered pale ales being, but the biscuits give a nice little bed for citrus and stone fruit. Honestly, the only problem is that I need more flavor crammed into the sip. This might be a good mellow beer for a relaxing night by the fire, but I need to swig. It is my way.
Tip-in is light carbonation that seems like it's building. The stone fruits are actually in front of the citrus, and the malt is background noise. The middle stretches itself into a delightfully thick malt-based citrus with the fizz of carbonation as the stone fruit eases away. The finish is bitterness with an echo of stone fruit before a somewhat acidic trail off.
Bottom Line: Could be more mellow or more flavorful. Get off the fence. Either way, not too bad.
