When was the last time I had a cider? A month ago? No, that was a mead. I think it was late last year when I had that run of ciders from Austin Eastciders that weren't great. The last one I liked was, technically, not a cider. It's time to get this ship cruising at the right altitude and kick that touchdown (I don't use metaphors, and now you know why).
For some reason, this looks thinner and paler to me than it should. Maybe I was expecting big hunks of donut to be floating on top or maybe I just assumed this would be as thick as Dunkin coffee. Either way, this is a fairly thin looking beverage with significantly more carbonation than your average cider. Oddly, when I was manipulating the empty can, I distinctly smelled glazed donuts, but sniffing the beverage, I smell a sweet wine-like apple.
First sip is somewhat spiced apples that are really nice on this cold evening. This was probably designed to be enjoyed during the fall/spring evenings, but it's winter as I write this, and I could use all the spiced apples I can get. This is not overly sweet, and it is pretty refreshing. I didn't know what to expect going in, but I like what I got.
Tip-in is sweet cinnamon apples with a distinctly wine-like backing and no carbonation to speak of. Carbonation picks up in the middle, and water surges past the flavors for a decent enough and unobtrusive quenching. The finish is strong granny smith, wine-like alcohol, and kind of flat cinnamon.
