I don't have mead often. I suppose I avoid it mostly because I'm not a huge fan of wine (I don't hate it, but it's not beer). Every time I have mead, I inevitably think about Viking Blod. That's strange, as it's not even the best mead I've had. Nope, that is a tie for two that are from this very producer. So, that sounds good.
That's white wine. I don't know how to more properly convey that this is exactly what anyone would expect when pouring a white wine. It may have a bit more carbonation (well, I think any at all is a bit more, but this isn't like a soda or something). The aroma is mouth-watering with orange and vanilla all sweet and floating on top of the already sweet enough honey.
First sip is... here's the thing: I recently had an actual, honest to goodness orange creamsicle. I know exactly what they taste like. This tastes like it has a lot more orange than cream, and the honey is honestly just distracting from the flavors of either. I'm not saying it's bad, but this could use a bit more attention paid to the balancing of the flavors. More vanilla. That's what we need here.
Tip-in is an underlying tart and dry with mild carbonation and orange starting to creep in. The wine-like mead infuses itself into the middle with honey and sweetness joining the orange and vanilla for a very nice, uncomplicated beverage to be enjoyed. The finish brings a bit of dryness back as tartness compliments the sweet for the trail off.
