I once again find myself in the strange position of trying to figure out if someone has decided not to tell me what is in a particular beverage. This says that it is Appalachian sippin' cream, so that automatically puts it in my cream category. Ordinarily, that would be enough, but not this time. At 20% ABV, this seems like it has a lot more alcohol than a regular adult cream would have. The only other Sugarland's beverages that I recall having was a moonshine (I was mistaken). I am at this point wondering if they've just gone ahead and added moonshine to some cream and called it a day. Obviously, they've added some orange.
I can't adequately express how distressing the beverage looks as soon as you open the jar. The electric orange combined with the brown of the jar creates an unholy hue. Once it's poured into a glass, it doesn't look nearly as intimidating, but it's not like other creams. Yes, it has the same consistency, but it has a very strange shade of orange that puts me in mind of a glass of milk that has been slowly absorbing circus peanuts. The smell is slightly orange above some pretty serious alcohol.First sip is not at all what I expected. The alcohol is definitely here and not being quiet, but the orange has mint or something like it added. There is vanilla in it, too, and the result is a bit of a jumbled mess. However, as is the way with these high-alcohol spirits, it takes a few sips to get a handle on them.
After several more sips, the mess is gone. Instead, the mix is now smooth. Well - to a point. The back-end seems like it has a bit of a kick up in alcohol that the cream and the orange can't seem to keep down. It is a blemish on an otherwise fairly good sip.
Bottom Line: Not for everyone.
