Okay, let's get this over with. I have found hard sodas in the past that were quite good. In fact, there are some that I have liked so much that I've ordered them while out. So, I'm not going into this with a hatred of hard sodas; however, Mountain Dew is testing my patience. In every one of these so far, the biggest problem has been with the sweetener that they used. It is not good. I wonder why they decided to come out with zero sugar versions and not regular versions. Yes, it would mean more calories, but is your target audience really looking to save this many calories? I mean, this can is still 100 cal, and a pint of Guinness is 125 and one of the best hard root beers is 177. I don't know what you're saving, but you're not saving enough.
I think if I set this next to the hard cherry, I might be able to tell the difference in color. Maybe this is a bit more strawberry colored. Either way, it isn't the color of watermelon. This one has decidedly more points of nucleation that are spouting carbonation, and I'm not sure what that's about. The aroma reminds me of the watermelon Italian ice that I have sitting in the freezer right now, and I love those things. Maybe this will be the dark horse. Maybe this will be the winner in the bunch.First sip is a bold watermelon flavor that hits solidly and very well. I think you know where this is going, though. Yes, the aftertaste from the sweetener is terrible. I just don't know what more to say. All of these have been bad, and I can't recommend any of them. I'm not even sure I ever want to have a Mountain Dew at all ever again. I don't understand who developed this beverage, and I don't understand who their target audience is. I just know that I don't want to spend much time with either of them.
Bottom Line: This experiment is fortunately over.
