I have a friend who was born and raised in the Tennessee mountains, and he has commented in the past about the real moonshine you get in the mountains. It has that corn flavor to it that is sweet and smooth. I followed up by asking if he could acquire some of this moonshine for a review, and he said he'd have to look into it, but I shouldn't be fooled into thinking that it tasted good. So, this may very well stink.
I have had White Lightning before, and I hated it. I had it supercharged to 64% ABV in Blue Flame, and that also sucked (strangely, not as bad, though). This looks just like those do. It's just a clear liquid. The aroma reminds me of those nasty beverages, but I think I can fool myself into smelling some corn in there. Is there banana? Maybe. Definitely alcohol.
First sip slams that Kentucky hug right down the chest. It is a very nice sensation. The flavor isn't as bad as I remember the other two being, but I've gone through the effort of trying out my new metal ice cubes to keep it cold, and I gave it a TV-style sip where the beverage will last through hours of filming a scene. I do, indeed, taste the corn husks.
Further sipping... I didn't think I would enjoy one of these. I prepared myself for massive disappointment. This is actually kind of nice and has a slight, strange anesthetic effect on my tongue that is more noteworthy than either pleasant or unpleasant. I accidentally had more than a sip, and I will taste the burning at the back of my mouth until tomorrow morning, but I still say this is pretty good.
Bottom Line: Maybe I'm coming around to moonshine.
