3 Floyd's always does something strange and interesting with their cans. It's intriguing that they somehow managed to get a Guar aesthetic, with all of its mayhem and weird creatures, but they are still recognizable at a glance. There's no question that this is a 3 Floyd's beer, based on the depiction of Vikings and elephants and axes and I'm not sure what else. I look forward to their beers, and I should be looking forward to quite a few, as I believe I picked up a bunch.
I'm used to my double IPAs being very hazy, and this one is only kind of hazy. The head doesn't rocket out, but it does a very good job of capping the beer in a visually pleasing way, and there will be striations of bubbles left in the wake as it goes down. Some double IPAs smell a little stodgy or musty, but this one smells of neither. There are bright hops on top of deep malt. I'm really looking forward to having this beer.
The taste is tropical fruits and citrus fruits kind of mingled in with a caramel malt. For a beer that looks to be so boisterous from the can and the name, this is actually pretty mellow for double IPA. Is mellow what I really go to 3 Floyd's for? Honestly, I think I'll take it anywhere I can get it. It has nice flavor, and it's good and thick. I think the name is a misstep, but the flavor isn't. And I wonder if it will get even better with a swig.
Tip-in is bitter tropical fruits on top of a fairly muted but still thick caramel malt. The middle sends mild carbonation to the roof of the mouth while the citrus is joined by tropical fruits, and flowers seem to adorn them all. The finish is a little more bitterness as the citrus takes over from tropics, and then the malt surges a little bit more for the trail off.
