When I picked this up, I was pretty sure it wasn't going to be very good.... economical is the vibe it gives off, and it appears to want to be accessible to the average lay person. I recently spent some time in a restaurant that had an attached bar, and my dining companion and I commented on the pedestrian beer that this slightly upscale restaurant had to offer. They had one local beer from Yazoo, but everything else was Miller, Budweiser, or something similarly offering reduced flavor content. I feared that this would be the same, but the gentleman behind the counter at the beer store insisted that this was going to be different, and I was likely to like it. We shall see.
It looks like a light beer when poured. It is a light beer, so I can't really fault it for that. The head was surprisingly short-lived, but it was white while it existed. There won't be any lacing left behind, but these light lagers don't really have that. The aroma is mildly malty, but I would say that it is more straight forward than most of the other light beers I've had. A step in the right direction.
First sip is malty, and it's pretty flavorful. I don't mean to sound surprised when I say that, but I am surprised, and I'm saying it. It's not that light beers shouldn't have flavor, but they all too frequently don't. This sweet beer has a lot of corn flavor to it, and light beers are generally fairly watery, but this one manages to avoid the trap of being excessively watery (to the point that water might be preferred). So far, this is going pretty well.
Tip-in is a biscuit malt with the corn sweetness that I tasted in the sip. I'm not sure if I'm actually tasting hops, or if I'm just imagining a slight herbal and floral taste, but it is complementing the malt just fine. Critically, the beginning of the beer is not watery. The middle thins out a bit, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it watery as the malt can't really keep up with the rest of the beer, but it all flows nicely down the gullet. The finish is a slight bitterness added to sweetness that caps off what turned out to be quite a lovely little light beer.
Bottom Line: I may pick up more of this, as my propensity for beer has been reflecting in my waistline.
