I don't know anything about whiskey. I've had a few tries at whiskey, and most of the whiskey that I have tried has been mixed into a cream. Some would argue that that is nothing like whiskey. I would probably agree with that argument. I have had more moonshines than I have whiskey, and they are effectively whiskey that hasn't been aged. I'm not sure that that means that they count as whiskey, and I don't think it does. Nevertheless, I picked up this tiny bottle, and I want to see what it taste like.
Unsurprisingly, it looks a lot like whiskey. I didn't really expect different, but the idea that this is a barbecue whiskey would seem to imply that it has a little more going on than your average whiskey. I did think that was gonna come across in the color, but it doesn't appear to have. This might be slightly more red and slightly darker than the other ones that I've tried, but I'm still not good enough with whiskeys to know what the average color of a whiskey really is. The aroma informs me as to why they call this a barbecue whiskey. Yes, it smells like whiskey, but there is a lot of smoke going on that I don't recall tasting in any previous whiskey. It smells very good, and I'm gonna let you know how it is.
The instructions on the bottle say to throw it back, but that wouldn't let me really taste it very much. As a result, I sip first. And the first sip is staggeringly different and surprisingly good. It has a sweetness of barbecue sauce along with the aforementioned smokiness that is combining to really mellow out the entire experience. I cannot express to you just how much I enjoyed that first sip. Maybe it was because I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did, or maybe it's just that good. Only the rest of the bottle will tell.
I've had more, and I am really starting to appreciate what the difference is between this and other whiskeys. There is the bite from the alcohol from a whiskey that is normally portrayed on movies as someone smacking their lips and clenching their teeth together to let you know that what they just had is a drink with too much alcohol that they drank too quickly or didn't expect. This one doesn't have that. This one is smooth and subtle. I was shocked when I looked it up and found it was 34% ABV. I may get a big bottle of this. Editor's note: I did.
Bottom Line: Genuinely different and outstanding.
