They are really going all-out with the "All Day" moniker at this point, aren't they? They have the original All Day IPA, and then they added the All Day Chill Day IPA, the Haze, and now a Black IPA with the same sub-brand. I wonder if they are going to go all-in like New Belgium has done with the Voodoo Ranger brand. I hope not. It causes more confusion in the market than the market needs.
Oh what beautiful lacing this head leaves as it recedes. And the off-white head leaves some thick splotches of bubbles and some completely naked spots that are relatively unique and quite alluring. The color of the actual beer is expected to be black, and it is... a very dark ruby that is shockingly clear in the middle, when you toss many photons through it. The aroma is lite citrus, chocolate, and a splash smoke - very much not what an IPA usually smells like, but I'm cool with that.
First sip is very much not good. The smoke is really heavy - like this has been soaking in charcoal for a while. It's joined by coffee before pine takes a bat to the tastebuds. I don't know where the citrus and chocolate went, but I am not sure I really care. I wanted this to be so good, and the first sip is just a shock. But, it was only a first sip, right?
Tip-in is actually pretty gentle smoke and coffee with a dash of orange and rising carbonation. The middle becomes a little chocolately with the coffee and smoke close at hand and the citrus starting to come out on top. The finish is bitter chocolate and coffee with pine and possibly some flowers.
Bottom Line: A gulp saves it.
