Yea! Bells! The folks from Michigan have a stinker every now and then, but I always find myself looking forward to getting to try their beer. I'm guessing that Bell's saw the brilliance that was the Two Hearted Ale, and they have tried to just carry that brand into anything they can. Change of Heart, presumably, means that this really has nothing to do with that gem.
The yellow beer is almost on its way to gold, and the white head tops it in a particularly picturesque way. Sadly, it looks like there won't be any lacing going on, but I guess it is what it is. The aroma hit as soon as I opened the can, and it is an odd botanical aroma of flowers, pine, and grains. There is also a smell like powdered milk, for some reason. It doesn't smell great.First sip is not as bad as I feared it would be, but it's not great. The botanical nature of the beverage is a bit... agricultural for me, and the bitterness that hits on the back end isn't doing it any favors. However, once all that has gone away, the taste that remains in the mouth is actually pretty good. What's odd is that it is both bitter and semi-sweet. It's intriguing.
Tip-in is pine, wet leaves, and flowers with a few fruit peels tossed in for good measure. The middle becomes unpleasant as the carbonation rises to the top of the mouth and joins pine and botanicals for a party that no one invited them to. The finish is bitter peels and pine before heading into the trail off.
Bottom Line: The experiment could use more work.
