Elysian, visitors may remember, have produced some really spectacular beers. So, when pumpkin beer time started, and the idea that there may be a good pumpkin beer out there really entered my mind, I was happy to see that they had options. Those options came in a variety pack, so that was a bonus! The pack came with some kind of pumpkin coffee beer, and I have already thrown that one out.
I'll call the color a pumpkin orange, if that pumpkin has started to rot a bit. Possibly, if the pumpkin had cinnamon added to it, it would be less gross-sounding while remaining the same color. It's amazing how little head comes from the beer straight out of the bottle. The aroma is heavy with cinnamon, but leaning into it reveals a delightful pumpkin pie side to it, and it is going pretty well so far.First sip is a curiously cinnamon pumpkin pie. It lacks the crust, though, and the pie seems like it's slightly off-balance. Maybe it was taken out of the oven a bit too early or something, but it's got a kind of waxy thing going on that just isn't working for me. I don't know that I can describe it much better than that.
Tip-in is pumpkin spice with a cinnamon sugar and no carbonation to deal with. The middle arrives with slight carbonation hitting the roof of the mouth and the flavors all thin out to leave a sweet pumpkin drifting through the mouth serenely. The finish is where the sweet turns dry and bitter, and that seems like the part that is causing this whole review to go toward the average side.
Bottom Line: Has promise.
