I suppose Lagunitas stands as good a chance as anyone, possibly even a better chance than anyone, of coming up with one of these strange low calorie and zero alcohol hop-flavored waters. Not really sure what the market is for these, even though I really like hops. The fact is, I just don't know what to expect, or what they are trying to go for. Either way, I picked up a pack, as I suspect they know what they're doing. I say that after I read on the side of the can that it was produced for them, and there's no indication as to who actually produced it. That's not as confidence inspiring as you might hope.
The beverage looks like seltzer water when you pour it. It doesn't even have a slight haze or slight color to it that you might expect with the addition of something to water. It reminds me of Sprite or 7-Up in its clarity and carbonation, as it's trying to fool you into believing that it is something that potentially has no flavor. The actual aroma, however, leads me to believe that this has lemons and limes and it, just like the aforementioned Sprite and 7-Up. I'm very confused.First sip isn't great. It has a tinge of the bitterness from the hops, but then it has the citrus flavors mixed into whole bunch of water. I'm not sure I should have expected anything different. It's not great, but it isn't making me want to throw this out immediately. If someone wanted to grab a mostly flavorless beverage after a workout or some strenuous chore that they had to accomplish, I'm not sure that I would grab this before a watered-down macro brew.
Tip-in is forward carbonation sizzle with some pine mixing into lemons and limes. The middle of the beer turns very refreshing, as it is mostly water. I find that water is pretty refreshing on its own, and the flavors all but go way right here in the center. The bitterness hangs on for the back end, and the zest of the fruits hits right before the trail off.
Bottom Line: I'd probably rather get a Sprite Zero, but this is mostly nothing.
