What came over me? When I went to the beer store the other day, I picked up some things that weren't beer. First, I had the staggering disappointments that were the Lone River hard seltzers, and then I moved on to the similarly unappetizing Truly seltzers. At least I had a good cream in the middle, but I don't think I was making particularly good choices while I was standing there in the beer aisle. I have three of these All Hands beverages to review, and I'm hoping these turn the tide.
See? This is the color I expect soda water to be. It's clear. When you add vodka, which is also clear, you get a clear beverage. What color is the ruby red grapefruit? Well, the name would imply that it would be ruby red, but this isn't. It's clear. I don't know why they had to add to make it clear, and right now I don't care. The aroma is vaguely sweet with alcohol and, as you might expect, grapefruit. Other than that, there's not much to look at. The can says I should probably have put ice in here, but this is pretty cold out of the fridge, so I'm going to not dilute it.First sip is pretty good. It is slightly sweet, slightly grapefruit, and not much else. They didn't add any artificial sweetener, so I don't have the same problem I had with the recent Truly beverages. Instead, the taste is even and refreshing. If I were to say anything bad, the taste may be a little flat and watery, but the first sip is still pretty good.
Tip-in is light carbonation tingle with a sugary sweetness and a tartness that tastes more like lemons than grapefruit. The middle sends carbonation to the roof of the mouth while the center fills with the heavy alcohol of the vodka. Perhaps 10% ABV was not the right amount to go for, as this part of the beverage feels laden with alcohol rather than refreshing like the sip was. The finish is even more of the alcohol hit that comes more as flavor than it does as burning, but it's still intrusive rather than complementary.
Bottom Line: It's inoffensive, and it likely has its place.
