My dabbling in whiskey has shown me that I am just starting to understand what someone might look for in a whiskey, but no whiskey has gone so far as to be what I would rate as a great beverage. Mind you, I'm just starting out, and this blog exists so that I can chronicle my likes and dislikes for my own reference. Goodness knows I don't do this for other people. Nobody reads this other than me. With moonshine, I found that flavorings demonstrably improved the beverage enjoyment experience. That appears to be the case with whiskey, as well. Let's see if this one is an improvement over the others.
I would ordinarily say that this is just some average whiskey, and as a result it's the same brown liquor that you would see when you poured any whiskey out. This one, however, is much lighter. It looks almost watered-down. It made me read the label again to validate that this was not a flavored moonshine with coloring added. On the label, they actually say that they do add caramel color, and it appears that they don't add enough. The aroma has a whiskey tinge to it, but a sweet fake cookie dough is noticeable. If you've ever had a Quest protein bar that was cookie dough flavored, you know with that fake cookie dough scent is like.First sip is quite smooth and sweet. I know that this (adding flavor) is not the right way to enjoy whiskey, as there are good whiskeys and bad whiskeys. There are a whole strata of whiskeys in between, and they all have their pluses and minuses. This beverage could have started off with the crapiest whiskey they could find and just added flavor until it tasted like the flavoring. It turns out, I'm okay with that. This is better than many of the flavored moonshines, but the whiskey is so covered up that this may as well just be another moonshine. I'm not sure why they would go through the effort or expense of aging the moonshine in barrels just to cover the whole thing up with flavoring that the whiskey can't see out from under. Maybe the whiskey was that bad. I know moonshine certainly can be.
Bottom Line: Cover something up with flavoring, and it taste like the flavoring.
