I've been putting this one off. The writing on it is the wrong color for the background, and the script is kinda frilly. The last time I had that issue, the beer was not good, and I decried their use of frilly script to hide the fact that I wouldn't have purchased their beer in the first place. I'm really afraid this is going to go down the same way.
The clear yellow beer has a head on it. I cannot overstate how aggressive this foam was as soon as I opened the bottle. Mere moments after I popped the cap off of this beer (which resisted the efforts of my Pop A Top bottle opener and even a Chinese knock-off that I had as a backup) bubbles started cascading out of the beer and seemed like they weren't ever going to stop, so I just started pouring. The aroma is sharp and sour. I sincerely hope this isn't a sour beer that has fooled me.
First sip is not good. It's not very sour, but it is definitely moreso than I would like. What's wrong with the beer is the funk brought by the yeast. It just isn't getting along with the hops, and the apple sourness is a bit off in the first place (to be honest, I like sour apple flavored stuff sometimes). So, no, I wouldn't say the sip has impressed me very much.
Tip-in is light carbonation tickle with that sour apple and the yeast sitting on top, trying to get along. The middle arrives with an unexpected balance that has pine and flowers mixed into the yeast - which comes across as somewhat Belgian - and the sour takes a back seat to the apple itself. The finish is too sour for my taste before the mustiness of the yeast takes over for the trail-off.
Bottom Line: Certainly not the worst sour I've ever had.
