Have we come full circle? The first one of these creams that I tried was Bailey's original. I found that it was delightful, sweet, and expectedly creamy, and I really didn't think much beyond that. Then, I found out that there was a company producing southern cream. I just came across this the other day, and it is Bailey's version of one of Jackson Morgan's best seller. I'm nearly giddy with anticipation.
Unsurprisingly, it looks pretty much identical to regular Baileys. It's possible it's slightly more brown, but I don't have them side-by-side, and I'm not sure really even matters. I know that the previous salted caramel beverage was a little more brown than this one is, but I really am not sure that it matters at all. The aroma is decidedly alcohol heavy, and the caramel seems to come forward just a little bit.
First sip is very smooth. It is just as sweet as I remember the other salted caramel beverage being, but this has a bit more of a rough edge to the back end. I know it says that this has salt in it, but I'm really not getting any of that salt in these few sips I've taken. Instead, it's just mostly cream and caramel. Well, I say that, but I'm kind of skipping the alcohol elephant in the room. This definitely tastes the 17% ABV that it is, and I'm not sure if I'm happy or disappointed that it is so proud of its alcoholic roots.
After a few more sips, it's still just as smooth, and the alcohol seems to have worn its way in and created a butt groove on the couch of my pallet. As a result, the alcohol is not nearly as invasive as it seemed originally, and the smoothness of the beverage has really won out. Still, it isn't as good as its roots. And it also can't hold up to the southern pretenders.
Bottom Line: A very good, sweet dessert.
