Interestingly, it doesn't say moonshine anywhere that I can see on this label. Well, I suppose I need to take that back. On the back of the jar, there is a distressingly difficult to read explanation of the beverage that specifically refers to it as a cherry limeade moonshine. However, I would be quick to point out that it does not say that on the front. On the front, it simply says it has green neutral spirits with natural cherry limeade flavor and certified color. Nothing says either "delicious" or "good for you" quite as much as "certified color."
Well, they added coloring, so they made it look like it has cherries in it or something. Interestingly, the shade is not too far off from the moonshine cherries that are recall having from Ole Smoky. The aroma is, surprisingly, not laden with alcohol. At 20% ABV, I expect to be able to smell the alcohol pretty quickly, but it is hidden well underneath the cherry and lime. It actually smells very good, and I am starting to think that this might be a tremendous beverage.
First sip is certainly not a bad beverage, but it is not the same as the aroma was. There is cherry, and there is lime skin, but the finish adds the alcohol and what I can only describe as celery. I don't mind celery, but I just wasn't expecting it in a limeade. Maybe if this was called a celery cherry limeade, I would have understood. However, I'm not sure a celery cherry limeade would really sell. I'm not even sure I would have picked this one up, if that's the way it was marketed.
After drinking this for a while, I added some ice cubes, and the added cold is really helping this smooth out quite a bit. Additionally, the celery seems to have abated in the presence of the ice, so it tastes a whole lot more like what I expected, and it is doing a fairly good job of quenching my thirst. However, the whole experience has kind of put me off of this beverage.
