I do not see on the can that this might be barrel aged, but the 10.1% ABV makes me think that they may have just omitted this vital bit of information. This seems too high for a regular milk stout, but I have to take their word for what the beverage is. I have had many a milk stout from Tailgate, and I will gladly add another to the fold.
No one expected anything other than a black beer, did they? Well, the downright brown bubbles are not long for this world, so I caught them while they were here. The aroma is peanut shells and banana over the metallic earth undertone that I've come to associate with pretty much all of these Tailgate beers. It's a good smell, and I associate it with some good beer.
First sip is, sure enough, peanuts and bananas. It sits on top of the milk stout that might not be sweet enough to carry this beer along. There's bitterness on the back end, and the earth from what really feels more like an imperial stout intruding a bit. The beer is dry and bitter in a way that I do not recall previous milk stouts from Tailgate being. I guess I can remember something similar to this with the PB&J milk stout, but the J seems to have made up for it better than the banana is doing.
Tip-in is sweet molasses that is quickly joined by banana and motes of peanut dust. The middle sends carbonation to the roof while peanuts and banana smoothly flow through the center with solid earth under them. The finish is a bit of a mess with coffee, bitterness, dryness, and then an echo of banana and peanut shells.
