I tried a series of these in 2023, and I have been on the lookout for others, but the variety of producers of this type of beverage is not quite as widespread as you might at first suspect. Either that, or I'm looking in the wrong spots. Maybe middle Tennessee isn't the right place to find boutique Italian liqueurs. Either way, I found this one, so I'm going to dive into the lemony goodness.
Not shockingly, this is pretty shockingly yellow. I went out of my way to get my prestige picture out in the sunlight (despite the rather short days we're having right now). It is quite vibrant in color, and I distinctly remember the flavor that drew me to these. I hope this is a good one. The aroma of lemonheads is quite overtaken by the 30% ABV. Alcohol just drips out of the glass when you try to sniff it, and that may not bode well for a light and enjoyable sweet treat. I went back and checked, and the previous beverages were all 28% or lower, for what that's worth.
First sip is not the alcohol-fueled lighter fluid that I feared this would be. Mind you, there's no getting around the prodigious alcohol, but the hit at the beginning of the sip is quickly quenched with the lemons for the back end. The lemonhead candy never really hits like the candy would, but the sweet lemons are very nice and the Kentucky hug that comes afterwards is surprising and welcome.
Subsequent sips are more demure, as the body gets used to the expectation of the alcohol, so the mix can be sussed out in a bit more detail. The mix feels like it's not quite right, but it's not all bad. It feels like they could have aimed for lower ABV, but it's possible they wanted to stand out as more "adult" than the other brands, and I don't fault them for it. It is a solid entry.
