I have commented before that I think I prefer bourbon to regular whiskey, but that's just regular whiskey. I have yet to encounter a bourbon that will match my great enjoyment of the barbecue whiskey that I'm certain real whiskey people would lambast me for liking. Still, it's what I like, and my mind gets drawn to it every time I drink a whiskey that tastes astringent, and I wonder why we can't have more deliciously flavored whiskeys.
Guess what? It looks like whiskey. Not shockingly, it smells of whiskey. I really do think I need to just eliminate this paragraph when it comes to whiskey. There is little about the appearance that is unlike pretty much any other (non-flavored) whiskey. I will say that I decided to not water the whiskey down. Instead, I will stick it in the freezer for a while to see if the cold will make the change that I look for in the beverage.
First sip is quite strong. This whiskey hits a strange wine-like taste right in the middle, before the Kentucky hug makes itself known. Overall, the drink is not particularly nice. It's generally smooth, but it feels like they decided to make it 45% ABV on a dare, and they were going to pin it there. However, after it's gone, there is a kind of nice, almost buttery flavor of corn left on the lips.
Continued sipping, as usual, means that the generally abrupt nature of the sip mellows a lot. The result is a beverage that is still probably too strong, but it has an almost popcorn flavor over the alcohol that I kind of like. If it wasn't spoiled by the abundance of alcohol, this might be a very good sipping drink.
