As this is Stone, this is going to be good. I mean, I guess there is always a chance that one of the most reliable breweries is going to somehow manage to screw up an IPA, but it seems pretty unlikely. Most of the time, I pick up a Stone beer, and I have high expectations that they still somehow manage to exceed. I'm putting them on a pedestal, but it's one that they have earned through hops, water, and malt.
Honestly, it could be hazier. I remember the Konkey Dong that I had a little while ago, and that was properly hazy. This is just kind of less filtered than normal. I still don't know why people think this'll make it taste different. The pretty tame head manages to keep a ring on the sides very well, and a smattering of bubbles is scattered across the top of the beer. The aroma is tropical over citrus. I prefer the reverse, but you go with what works.
First sip is freaking spectacular. It's got the tropical fruits with the citrus backing, but the real important thing is the way the smooth drink goes down without a hiccough. It is so smooth, it's hard to believe this is a 6.7% IPA. Normally, you get those hops riled up, and they will spew bitterness and alcohol at you in equal measure. In this case, the bitterness is well tamed. It's almost like they really know what they're doing, the arrogant bastards.
Tip-in is starfruit and some mellow tangerine with grapefruit propping it up under minimal carbonation. The middle comes with more of the same flavors, and it is smooth and gentle across the whole mouth. The finish has some bitterness seeping in with pine, but it is expertly handled and still a treat.
