I looked on the can to see what kind of a beer this was. From the pickle stand on the front, I assumed that it was going to be a pickle beer like Donna's. Here's the thing, I really liked that beer. I think I probably gave it a lower score than it deserved, but I think about that beer quite a bit, and I liked it so much that I picked up another pack of it when I was at the store last time. If this beer is anything like that, it is going to be standing on its shoulders and getting a great review. I hope that I'm in for some pleasure.
The beer produces way too much head. I'm talking, way too much head. At the end of the can, lots and lots of detritus gets dumped into my beer, and that doesn't seem to make it look much better. There's no indication on the can as to whether or not you should pour fast to get the carbonation out or pour slowly and make sure that you don't get the yeast at the bottom of the can or what. I guess they don't worry about that kind of thing in Cincinnati. When the can said that it was an ale brewed with cucumbers and spices, I assumed that they meant pickles. After all, a pickle cart is shown on the can. The aroma, however, is cucumbers and spices. It does not smell like pickle brine. This is a strange turn of events.
First sip is, in fact, cucumbers and spices. If there is an ale lingering underneath there, it is only working as a medium for getting the cucumber juice to my taste buds. After that, it is not really imbuing the beverage with any kind of significant flavor. The spices and cucumbers taste okay, but I'm not eating a salad here. I'm trying to drink a beer, and this isn't it. I'm already glad that I have a pack of pickle beer waiting for me in my fridge. I may be grabbing one of those when I'm done with this review.
Tip-in is cucumber peel, various spices, and shockingly little carbonation. The middle is just plain bad with the spices and cucumber becoming way too much and I guess whatever the ale is is trying to peek out, and the sensation is terrible. The finish is tart and bitter with spices and pickles left on the lips where I don't really want them.
