My flirtation with Common John seems like it's spiraling. I don't know why the last one was skunked, but it didn't help their overall ratings (see the chart at the bottom). I want to view these guys as just another brewery in the area that is run by some good ole boys (or girls) who wanted to pump out some beer, and they have a taste for what's right (like a Yee-Haw).
The golden lager is darker than most lagers, and it's definitely darker than most Mexican lagers. The head really didn't want to come out to play, and it won't leave any lacing after it dies down to a few scattered bubbles across the top of the beer and minimal bubbles holding the line around the sides of the beer. The aroma is a nice malt, and I think I smell some light spices coming at me. That's cool. I want something that has a little personality tonight.
First sip is nice, smooth, and it hits with some light spices. The malt stands up and bring sweetness, but it doesn't undermine a taste of bitterness at the end. So, what we have is a complex and nice beer that needs more than a sip. It needs a gulp, and that's how we play over here.
Tip-in is almost no carbonation, a caramel malt, and very light spices. The middle arrives with carbonation heading to the roof of the mouth while the malt gets pretty watery and is joined by herbs. The finish is sweet before bitterness gives it a kiss and sends caramel malt and spices into the trail off.
Bottom Line: Pretty good.
