I don't really think of black cherries when I think of prison breaks. Not even when I think of the old TV show Prison Break. I don't even remember if they had alcoholic beverages in that show, but I assume they did, at some point. If they were in prison, wouldn't it be some kind of pruno? Is this some kind of pruno? They should really disclose that kind of thing on the label, if it is. The only thing it says is that it is a malt beverage. That is profoundly unhelpful information when trying to figure out what something is actually made of, but maybe I just get whatever I get.
I know it's colored so that it's supposed to kind of look like black cherry juice, but it is very clear and puts me more in mind of blackberries than cherries. The aroma is cherries, though. I'm not sure I would necessarily say that it was black cherries, but maybe there's something hidden in the taste that I'm going to be able to tease out a little bit better. Either way, the presentation is perfectly fine, but I am still struggling with the idea that these are made for someone who wants a 10% ABV beverage, and they don't want some kind of liquor. They just want to make it seem like they want some kind of liquor.
First sip let's me know what exactly they were going for with the black cherry. It is definitely a deeper taste than a maraschino cherry or the like. However, this doesn't make it a particularly good beverage. The effect is like Jell-O shots where the Jell-O is all melted and not enough alcohol has been added to justify it. The Jell-O might not even be sweet enough. I don't think I'm even going to bother checking back in after a few more shots, as I'm just not a huge fan. I don't imagine it's going to get better with time.
