So, I had Jameson twice for review. Once was a hard soda ... well, I guess it was just a whiskey soda ... and it was fine. I don't think I would go back to that well often, as there are lots of things more suited to my taste. The other was the whiskey that was matured in an IPA barrel. That seems to be the opposite of the kind of barrel aging I expect, but it was pretty darn good for a whisky.
Whiskey is the color of whiskey. The aroma is, and this may be a shock to you all, whiskey. I am almost certain I smelled banana when I first brought it to my nose. Am I supposed to smell that? Is that part of the nature of this particular whiskey? I have no idea. I read somewhere that I should smell green apple, and I think I do. I think.
First sip is strange. It is quite mellow at first. I don't know if it's because I decided to put ice in the glass with the whiskey or not. It probably is, but I have slowly found that I like the whiskey better that way. Purists will say that I'm watering it down, but I think whiskey and water is a real thing that people order, so I'm not alone. Either way, the front is mellow, but the back is whiskey-flavored alcohol. I wouldn't say it's smooth, but I'm not a whiskeyman.
Continued sipping reveals that the beginning that was mellow was, indeed, just the watered down whiskey. So, what we have left is a whiskey that tastes slightly of green apples (but it probably smells more like it than tastes). I think I would have preferred the banana flavor from a Jack Daniel's.
