I don't want to deal with a bunch of crap. I literally want to have nothing but fun. With the recent release of my Top Five for porters, I thought it might be fun to delve back into the porter world and I remembered the great beers I had. Man, those were some good beers, and I hope this one can make me redo the list with my first 5/5 porter.
I normally start with the color of the beer, but the nutty smell is the thing that wafts out immediately, and it smells really dang good. What seems odd is that the nuts get muted when you get close to the top of the beer, and the malt is very forward with some sweetness and earthiness to it. Some mix is happening to make it smell a bit syrupy, and I'm not sure I like that. The very dark brown beer gives up the off-white head very quickly, and the scant resulting bubbles aren't going to leave lacing.
First sip is better than that second smell, but it's not as good as the first. There is quite a bit of coffee coming from the malt, and the nuts are kind of lost in the whole operation. As you may know, I don't like coffee. And, like onions, the taste tends to dominate whatever it is combined with, so you can't really enjoy anything other than the big, fat, stupid taste that no one asked to join the party.
Tip-in is pecans, vanilla, and too much coffee. The middle spreads into a thick heap of coffee grounds, earth, and there might be pecan shells, but they are hard to discern. The finish is dry and bitter with coffee really the only thing I can think of.
