I entered this review with some trepidation. I saw in the cooler that Tailgate had several beers that were in some kind of "Wizard" series that I don't really understand, and this looked tangential to those. As they appear to have spent some time creating this sub-line, I figured I would give it a try. However, I may have made a horrible mistake. I only saw the word trees, and I did not notice the reference to weed at the bottom. If this thing is dank, it better not have much. I have found that a minimal amount of dank can add to the flavor of some beers, but enjoyers of this particular kind of drug seem to go a little overboard at times. Let's see if they do this time.
It says hazy IPA, and it's hazy. The orange beer has a very nice cap on it that is an appropriate size, and it leaves lacing on the sides as it boils down to an incomplete but still impressive lily pad with a ring. It won't surprise me to find out that the ring of bubbles around the side of the glass has some kind of a name to it that I should probably know by now. I don't know what the name is, but I see it on almost all the beers. The aroma is, sadly, dank on top of citrus and tropical fruits.
First sip is pretty dank. It also winds up being dry, and that saps the juiciness from the fruits. That's a shame, as the juice tastes pretty good, but it is masked by the overwhelming dankness. Carbonation doesn't really seem to be much of an issue, but the dank is just not improving the beverage in a way that it should. I'm hoping that this gets better as I do a proper swig.
Tip in is immediately dank with moderate carbonation and a little bit of fruit just peeking through. The dank moves out of the way for the juice to erupt at the center of the beer, and the sensation is very nice. The finish is abhorrent with dankness and dryness overwhelming the juice and leaving bitterness to join it for the trail off.
