I don't know what to expect with Surge. The standard White Claws weren't terrible, and this is going to be, presumably, more of the same. The "Surge" part is what I question. I seem to recall the box saying something about what it was, but I didn't read it particularly closely. I can see right off the bat that this is 8% ABV, and that is up from the 5% ABV of the standard varieties. I don't know if that is the only real distinction among them or not.
What hasn't changed is the color and general presentation. It's a seltzer, so it is water with sparkly bubbles. I suspect these are all going to be the same and I should probably just stop commenting on them, but this is my process, and I'm going to follow it. I distinctly remember the lime version of the standard beverage, and this doesn't have nearly as much of a lime aroma emanating from it. I don't know if that means that these are going to be more watery than the others, but I hope not. What I was kind of hoping for was that the Surge would be a surge in flavor. It has certainly surged from 100 calories to 160 calories. That's not double, but that's not nothing.
Right away, when I started the sip, I expected to convey to you that the beverage was indistinguishable from the other lime. That would be lying. This is more watery, and it also now has the alcohol peeking through. Considering the style of beverages I normally enjoy, a little bit of alcohol peeking through is not a deal breaker, but I'm not sure that's what these beverages were really intended to do. Maybe that's where the Surge is. Either way, the sip was bland and fairly uninspired.
Tip-in is lime tartness with carbonation sizzle; the lime is strong, like it was in the standard beverage, and like it needs to be in all of these seltzers. The middle gets somewhat unpleasant with the lime dropping out of view entirely as the water takes over with a slight alcohol buzz mingling with the carbonation. The finish is a disaster with alcohol hitting unrelentingly and there is no lime to be found.
