My journey with White Claw has surprised me. I was sure I was not going to like these, and they appear to be some of the best of the seltzers. They have a lot more flavor than other seltzers, and I think that is really what is putting them over the edge. If you're in the mood for a seltzer that has only the suggestion of a flavor, there are plenty out there, but these take it a slight step forward. These aren't into the realm of soda, but they know that they are going to separate themselves by having a memorable flavor, so that's what they're going with.
Unsurprisingly, this pours like seltzer water. It's got tons of bubbles coming up to the surface, but what head that there was no longer exists. Aside from that, it's just a clear beverage. I did not notice any scent while I was pouring, so it's not as if this is particularly vibrant with smell, but it's good enough once I stick my nose down into the glass and get a snootfull of pineapple. I have previously mentioned that I am fond of pineapple, and I am looking forward to this pineapple beverage. I never thought I would be looking forward to a White Claw.
First sip makes me think that pineapple isn't the flavor they should have gone with. I distinctly remember the lime having a pretty good balance, but this does not. The pineapple isn't mixing well with the seltzer, and the result is a sensation of carbonation mixing with the somewhat acidic nature of pineapple in a fairly unpleasant way. I was looking forward to this, but now I am not looking forward to a full swig. Nevertheless, that's what I do.
Tip-in is not sweet, as I expected, and it brings tartness with the rather grating pineapple and carbonation mixture that verges on turning sour. The middle seems to lose all flavor entirely as carbonation and water pretty much just take over the mouth. The finish is pineapple husks thrown against carbonation and settling in for the trail off.
Bottom Line: Not their best.
