I have become a bit of a proponent of these flavored moonshines. Yes, they are very commercial and very dissimilar to the stuff that's actually distilled up in the mountains of Tennessee, but this is about as close to real moonshine as a city dweller, or suburban dweller, should really aspire to. I haven't heard a whole lot to sell me on the idea of the real mountain moonshine. Plus, this gets the benefit of being flavored like blueberries. I like blueberries.
The color is very strange. I thought it was going to be purple when I looked at the jar, but it turned blue as I was pouring it. Once I take it out into the sunshine, it looks even more blue, but I can't say that it doesn't look a little purple. Neil deGrasse Tyson has often spoke of the naming of the colors in the rainbow and the fact that Isaac Newton decided he was going to add indigo because he wanted there to be seven colors. Well, I think this is indigo. That's what I'm going to go with. The aroma is very much blueberry muffins. I recently stayed in a hotel, and the only thing edible at the breakfast bar was a blueberry muffin. This smells just like that blueberry muffin.
First sip seems to start off pretty well, but then it takes a strange left turn with heavy grain alcohol and corn before it turns back to blueberries. I'm not sure what's going on with the middle of that, but it might just be that my taste buds weren't really prepared for a moonshine-backed blueberry. It is sweet, but the alcohol isn't particularly demure. As a result, the mixture is a little off from what I had been anticipating.
Subsequent sips don't really seem to correct for that strange center of the drink. While it becomes less noticeable as the alcohol settles in, each sip is strangely discordant with itself. The unsettled nature of the alcohol simply contributes to the inconsistent blueberry flavor. It's a shame, as I really wanted to like this, and I was sure I was going to enjoy it. I can say that it definitely tastes better over ice than it does neat. And that's how I'm going to drink the rest of it.
