For starters, I went back to see how well any of these seltzers had done. Much to my chagrin, it doesn't appear that any of them did particularly well. I really had high hopes for Lagunitas' version, as they brew things that are more akin to beer. As a result, I assumed something that was hoppy would make up for the rather crap taste that all of these have had. It did not. It appears that the best one that I've had was the one from Monster, and it wasn't great. Well, Scofflaw is a brewery that is well known to me, and I'm going to give them a try. I don't mind a good mimosa, so this stands a fighting chance.
The beverage pours a watery yellow like a fizzy lemonade. I guess the difference between this and lemonade is that this doesn't have any real floating bits suspended in it, it's just murky. It pours out with a soda-like head, and, like a soda, it disappears pretty quickly. The smell is not great. It's a little antiseptic and strangely botanical. The smell of this just made me looked up what was in a mimosa. I wasn't wrong. A mimosa is normally champagne and orange juice. Sometimes, they'll add some other type of alcohol to spice it up a bit, but this doesn't smell like that. I don't know why this smells like it does.First sip is pretty horrific. This does not taste anything like a mimosa. I suppose you could claim that there is an orange flavor to it, but it's more like the pulp from frozen, condensed orange juice. It doesn't really have much of an orange flavor, and its texture is unpleasant. The botanical taste that has been added is absolutely vile. I'm not going to be drinking any more of this, and I'll likely consider twice the act of picking up another Scofflaw beverage as a result.
Bottom Line: Vile.
