I have been working in the sun today. I need a refreshing beverage that has enough taste to make me know that I'm drinking but enough refreshment that I feel like I'm not dehydrated. This is where these kinds of relatively light lagers with fruit added seem to sit. The fact that it's from Tailgate makes this whole thing even better, as I particularly like this brewery, and they try not to steer me wrong.
The beer is more orange and a whole heck of a lot darker than a light and fun fruit beer is usually. The head disappears completely, and there is no ring or lacing to be seen. The aroma is heavy in citrus, but I don't know that I could pick this out as particularly lime. I mean, lime is in there, but it seems like the malt is making the ability to pick out the lime much harder than it normally would be.First sip is not the refreshing beer I expected. I wasn't thinking of a shandy or a radler, if that's what you're thinking. I was expecting this to be light and playful, and the malt is heavy while the citrus stings a bit. The issue is not even necessarily what the beverage is, but it is not what I was expecting. The actual taste is good, and the sweetness of the sip even now delights my tastebuds. I'll have more information when I gulp.
Tip-in is lime juice and a cracker malt, jut like a radler. The middle swings in with moderate carbonation hitting the roof of the mouth as the malt and juice do a nice little relatively refreshing dance in the middle of the mouth. The finish is where things get freaky with a wave of sweet followed by a wave of tart before the lime hits sweetness going into the trail off.
Bottom Line: Pretty much a higher ABV radler.
