The previous limoncello was an unexpected hit. I didn't know what to expect from something that was supposed to be a digestive in Italy. I mean, was it going to be the Italian equivalent of Pepto Bismol? Do I not know what a digestive is? Either way, it was sweet, smooth, lemony, and I enjoyed the entire bottle a little too quickly. Let's see if Caravella can keep up.
The pale yellow of this liquid reminds me of how far I've come from the neon yellow of that first limoncello. It was very good, and I hope this one can come somewhere near it (if not surpass it). Weepers down the sides tell me this is an adult beverage, and the aroma is heightening that with thick alcohol on top of tart lemons. So, it smells a lot like limoncello.First sip is exceptionally good... at first. The lemonheads taste overcomes the raw alcohol easily, but the aftertaste reminds me more of lemon-scented dish soap. I'm not sure where the turn happened. I'm not even sure that the turn was real and not in my head (well, my tastebuds are in my head, so I guess most of this is happening in my head).
Subsequent sips reveal a lot less (if any) of the strange aftertaste. Instead, the beverage is pretty mellow, if a tad sweet. Lemons are not the most demure of fruits, and they are very vibrant here. As the bottle diminishes, I find myself reluctant to drink more, as the alcohol seems like it overwhelms the flavor a bit too much.
Bottom Line: A pale imitation of better limoncellos.
