Tuesday. It's a time for reflection on our Mexican brethren and to look forward to the fact that the week is in a morass - too early in the week to look forward to the weekend, but already late enough that it might be too late to start a new project at work. The only solution is tacos, clearly. Tacos and beer. I should (possibly) have eaten tacos with this beer for the review, but I don't review tacos (yet).
The yeast and fruits are stronger in this beer than other Mexican lagers I've had. Indeed, the aroma is quite strong for a style that is generally known for being laid back and a bit watery. The color is similarly a deeper yellow than others might be, and the head has better retention as two pads compete for space on top of the beer with even a hint of lacing in its wake.First sip is not great. It seems like they are trying to put too much flavor in a style that isn't intended for it, and it doesn't seem to fit. It's hard for me to put my finger on exactly what is wrong with the beer - it has too much yeast, too many hops, and too much malt. They are all fighting for supremacy, and taste isn't their main concern.
Tip-in is light carbonation tingle with dusty yeast and peach fuzz. The middle starts to become a bit more balanced as the malt comes in heavy to displace the yeast, and the hops ride along relatively peacefully. The finish is a bit of a travesty with dusty yeast turning slightly sour for the trail-off.
Bottom Line: Maybe let Mexico do the Mexican beers.
