First question I have out of the gate is: is there chocolate in this? I can't tell. It says that it is grain neutral spirits with natural flavors and artificial color. I'm a savvy enough consumer to know that "natural flavors" can include a lot of things. Those things do not necessarily include the chocolate that is featured on the label. I'm not sure why moonshine gets a pass on having to label their product with ingredients, but I guess this is the world we live in. I'm in the mood for a little bit of chocolate. And a little bit of alcohol with that would not go amiss.
The beverage is a relatively unremarkable dark brown liquor that shows the usual traces of weeping down the sides when the glass is sloshed around a little bit. The moonshine base for this cannot be overstated. This is not pretending to not have alcohol in it. This is forthright about its alcohol content, and that comes across as soon as the lid is unscrewed. I'm not sure I smell that much chocolate, but the chocolate that I do smell is like those tiny balls of fake chocolate that I remember having as a kid.First sip is very strong alcohol that covers up the chocolate for the first few moments after sipping. As the alcohol warms the throat on the way down, the chocolate comes out to play in the mouth. Surprisingly, it's not as unbalanced as I make it out to be. Instead, the sweet and smooth nature of the chocolate seems to be smoothing out the edges of the moonshine, and the result is a beverage that, while intimidating, would be just fine to take out onto the deck for a cool summer night.
Subsequent sips affirm my initial reaction. As seems typical with this type of liquor, the punch of alcohol that is noticed right off the bat eventually becomes a non-issue as the palette gets used to it and starts dealing with the alcohol and managing to let loose the sweet and smooth chocolate. All in all, I would say this is pretty good.
Bottom Line: I just said. Pretty good.
