I've never had a real Old Fashioned - like in a bar as mixed by a real, live bartender and stuff. So, I don't know how I'm going to accurately assess this canned version. I got this as an impulse purchase at the checkout when I was buying beer, and I can't really explain what made me do it other than idle curiosity. It's odd that I would give in, given that I can gleefully pass by some pretty interesting bottles of heavy alcohol while I'm in there, but these cute little cans that remind me of war rations or something gripped my attention.
The mostly amber liquid looks kind of like either a thick iced tea or a runny bourbon. The aroma is quite pungent, and it is heavy with alcohol that is indistinguishable from straight bourbon until you get right into the rim of the glass. That is where orange pops up and pretends to have been there the whole time while bitters shift around uncomfortably muttering, "Do you even know what I smell like, bro?"First sip is not great. The warmth of heavy alcohol is welcomed right down to my gut, but the method by which it gets there is across my tongue, and it has a lot to say about the fact that this doesn't taste great. Bourbon isn't my drink of choice, but I am okay with it. The addition of the bitters and the Demerara Syrup have not improved things - they may be negatively impacting them. The orange is there just to look on and shake it's metaphorical head.
Bottom Line: Maybe hard liquor isn't for me.
