I assume they didn't actually name this after the 70's TV show Solid Gold. I mean, I guess it could be any reference or no reference. But I don't know that the show was ever any good, and I expect that Founders is going to make a good beer, so the two really shouldn't have much in common.
The clear gold beer generates a good sized head that dissipates as quickly as you would expect a lager to, and there is a bit more lacing than usual for one. The aroma is a heavy bread malt and light citrus. I think this may be the lager that takes the crown so far.First sip is a lot more than the bread and citrus smell. It actually is more like a cracker malt with sweet corn and lemongrass. It’s solid and certainly drinkable – I might mean crushable. The fact is, this should be competing with macro lagers, and this is already coming out on top.
Tip-in is lemon spritz over cracker and grains. The middle shifts into sweet corn and lemongrass with a moderately watery center. The finish is the sweet corn and lemons.
Bottom Line: Better than most, certainly. But I’m missing the spark.
