I may have already mentioned that I really like the new design of the Goose Island beers. They are great - straight-forward, easy to read, and easy to differentiate. It's like when the location pops up in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies really big. It's nice and refreshing. Will the beer be nice and refreshing?
The copper beer spouts a significant head right out of the can, but little lacing will survive on the sides as it descends to become a Rorschach blob in the middle of the beer with large bubbles supporting some attempts at lacing around the sides. The aroma should be dank, and it is, but it is restrained. a bubbling caramel malt lingers under that with a modicum of citrus helping it out.
First sip is a cloud of dank hovering above a very mild beer. The beer features that caramel malt and a glaze of citrus and tropical hints (I really try to not use the word "notes" when I write these reviews, and I think it's starting to show) highlight the experience. The beer dips down into dank at the end of the sip to drag any kind of trail-off that direction.
Tip-in is light carbonation over the thick caramel malt with spritz of grapefruit and orange. The middle blows in with the dank being nothing more than an echo beyond the thick, sweet malt and the relaxing haze of tangerine, orange, and grapefruit. The finish is where the dank bomb lands with a dryness and fruit rinds.
Bottom Line: It's a bit prickly, but it has a heart.
