When I went down to the
Tailgate brewery with some wonderful family members, I tried quite a few of their beers. The problem with this technique of tasting beers is that you don't have a clean taste of any of them after the first one, and they tend to run together. I know I had this one while I was there, but I couldn't tell you much about it other than that I liked every beer there (which is typically the case when at a brewery).
The bronze-amber beer has a frothy head that eventually fizzles away, but it leaves some impressive (and beloved) lacing down the side of the glass. The aroma is gentle oranges and grapefruit on a warm bed of bread. I don't remember this being as mild-mannered as it is coming off, but I'm here for it.
First sip is a question: Did I say this was mild-mannered? This is NOT. This is pretty good, but it's a ferociously aggressive taste. It has the orange and grapefruit, but it's joined by a dank haze of a grainy dough and a tartness that isn't strong, but it lingers, mixing with the dankness.
Tip-in is grapefruit, tangerine, and a start of the tart-dank mix. The middle rolls in with flour-covered dough that dominates the citrus mix while the dank and tart scurry away to allow the middle to get smooth (despite carbonation sizzle). The finish is the dank-tart, but it's calm and relaxed atop the relaxing citrus and vanishing dough.
Bottom Line: A touchy beer that rewards a proper swig.
