I am not one to often revisit a beer for review. Yes, I'll grab a pack of pickle beer every now and then, but I'm not redoing the review of it. Technically, I've done three reviews of this beer already, but they appear to go by vintages, and this is the most recent one I could get my hands on. When I saw it in the store, it seemed inevitable that I was going to pick it up, even if I had already done this year. Well, I hadn't, so you're getting an extra review out of me. You're welcome.
The black beer struggles to produce any significant head. This is normal for these barrel aged beers, and I am not put off by the lack of beautiful, inviting lacing. The aroma does that thing where the smell suddenly brings back the memory of the previous version of the beer. The heavy, almost mahogany wood stores molasses and toffee with vanilla and... I fear I've made a mistake in trying to document this instead of just enjoying it.
First sip is so good. So, so good. The alcohol isn't hidden, but it's not throwing its weight around. The cherries and vanilla are a spark of life above the dark wood and molasses base. It all melds together in a syrupy mix of deliciousness that is sweeter than you might expect. I think that's something I probably left out of the previous reviews - there is sweetness of brown sugar that really mixes this up nicely.
Tip-in is sweet brown sugar and molasses to the point that I'm sure I mentioned this sweetness before - I had to. The middle oozes in with vanilla and cherries highlighting the heavy wood, alcohol, and molasses. The finish brings a hint of coffee that I don't remember in the previous beers, but that's not enough to spoil what is a sweet ending to the beer.
